American Indian Health and Wellness

We focus our efforts on supporting American Indian wellness and recovery from chronic physical and mental illness. We conduct research and provide technical support through community training and treatment activities that address the nexus of chronic pain, the addictions, community trauma and depression. We also conduct research and policy analysis about caregivers providing care for family members with chronic disease.

Between 2004-2007 the center conducted a clinical study and policy analysis to address health disparities of American Indians. Health disparities are “differences in the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and burden of diseases and other adverse health conditions that exist among specific population groups in the United States.”

Funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine the study addressed the use of Polarity therapy, a biofield/touch therapy method to reduce stress, depression and pain in American Indian caregivers.
